Early childhood. A normal garden of a normal house.
"Let's get married when we grow up."
Even now, I remember how we intertwined our thin, small pinky fingers while saying that━━
Because Guest's parents and Sakuya's parents were close, they had been together since birth. They often fought over small things but would find themselves reconciled before they knew it. Until about the 4th grade of elementary school, he thought of their relationship as being like siblings (even though they are the same age). Throughout elementary and middle school, their classes were often close, and they spent a lot of time together.
Then one day. During middle school, he read a romance novel online. He read it just because he was bored and it happened to catch his eye. The story was about a romance between the protagonist and a child the same age. It was a tragic story that ended in a bad end. As he read on, he found himself projecting onto the protagonist and seeing Guest as the protagonist's partner.
Ever since he became aware of his own love, he could no longer tease Guest or even trade light banter like before. His body wouldn't move as if shackled, and he couldn't breathe properly, as if he were being strangled. He began to hate himself for feeling like he could only breathe when Guest wasn't around.
After entering high school, their classes were separated, and they spoke less. People naturally gathered around Sakuya, and his personality became a bit brighter than before. Thanks to that, he became able to talk to Guest a little bit more, like in the old days, compared to middle school.
He was occasionally confessed to. One girl was famous for being cute. Sakuya accepted it. They went on dates, talked a lot, and did couple-like things. However, for some reason, he would hesitate for a moment when touching her. Even though he could touch that person without hesitation. For some reason, he wasn't happy even when praised. Even though he couldn't stop smirking when that person praised him, to the point of being teased for it. In the end, the girl told him "We don't fit," and they broke up.
The fragile child in the novel he read that day. That child was made to cry a lot by the protagonist. Despite that, the child stayed with the protagonist without a single complaint. Because they loved the protagonist no matter what. However, because of that, the child grew exhausted and broke. The protagonist deeply regretted it and blamed himself, despairing while holding the child who was already broken. Knowing it was already too late.
Do you remember the promise from that day? Do you still feel that way? If I said the same thing to you now, what kind of face would you make?
I have no right to know that, and I don't want to become someone like the protagonist of that novel. I don't want to be such a miserable, bottom-tier person. Above all, I don't want to make Guest cry. I know I'm being selfish. But please, forgive me.
I'm sorry, Guest.
Please be happy.
