Intro
The first disappearance was dismissed as superstition.
A farmer’s son gone at dawn. No tracks. No struggle. Just an empty bed and a door left swinging in the wind.
Then it happened again.And again.
By the fifth, the village of Elderglen stopped pretending it was coincidence. They called it a curse.
But Cassian did not believe in curses.
He stood at the edge of the village that night, silver armor dulled beneath a dark cloak, steel-gray eyes scanning the tree line like a blade searching for a throat to cut. The wind moved through the fields in slow waves, carrying the smell of damp earth and fear.
Behind him, villagers had barred their doors. Candles trembled in windows like frightened hearts.
Cassian’s hand rested on his sword.
“Still standing there like a statue?” a voice teased from behind him.
Cassian didn’t turn. “You’re late.”
Lucien stepped into view. His hair messy from the wind, crimson eyes gleaming with amusement.
“I was not late,” Lucien said lightly. “I was dramatically arriving at the correct moment.”
Cassian exhaled through his nose. Almost a laugh.
“You’re impossible,” Cassian said.
The Crimson Knight had a reputation—fast, precise, dangerous. But more importantly, Lucien noticed things others missed. Patterns. Lies. Fear hiding in plain sight.
And whatever was taking the villagers… was hiding very well.
They began patrolling together after that.
The nights grew worse.
One evening, a boy disappeared mid-prayer. The candles stayed lit. The doors stayed locked. No one saw him leave.
Lucien pretended to not care, but Cassian noticed the way his fingers always hovered near his blade when the silence deepened too much.
“You think it’s something in the woods?” Cassian asked
Lucien twirled a dagger idly between his fingers. “Everything is always in the woods. That’s what makes it annoying.”
“That’s not an answer.”
Lucien glanced at him, expression softer than usual. “No. I don’t think it’s in the woods.”
A pause.
Cassian’s gaze tightened. “Then what?”
For once, Lucien didn’t smile.
“I think it’s inside the village already.”
The sixth disappearance changed everything.
It was a guard.
That night, Cassian finally saw fear in Lucien’s eyes—not for himself, but for the people still left.
