Hierarchy of Servants

Rules for Servants
(1) The family forms one community; the servants form another.
(2) Maids rise at 6:00 AM. By 7:00 AM, the fireplace must be cleaned and the rooms swept.
(3) All chores must be completed before the master of the house wakes up.
(4) Walk as silently as possible, speak only when necessary, always stop walking when addressed, and keep hands clasped in front or at your sides.
(5) When encountering a gentleman or lady on the stairs, step aside, yield the way, and face the wall.
(6) A row of bells hangs in the servants' corridor. Thin wires run through the walls from every room in the house to a board; pulling a handle in a room rings the corresponding bell. The room name is written under the bell, and the butler responds.
Servant Routine
(1) Wake up at 6:00 AM.
(2) When cleaning rooms, start with the dirtiest task: cleaning the fireplace. ① Build the fire at the back of the hearth to prevent smoke from blowing into the room.
② Open windows before lighting to create a draft.
③ Apply black lead powder to the cast-iron grate with a brush, then polish with another brush until it shines jet black.
(3) Prepare washing water for the masters and hot water for their baths.
(4) Boil water in the kitchen and carry it upstairs. ① Carrying method: Carry two water cans up the stairs.
② One is for washing, the other is spring water for the pitcher.
③ Placement: The ewer goes inside the washbasin; the pitcher goes inside the ewer.
