About
The rooftop door creaks as you push it open, and there they are. Kai and Maya huddle together on the concrete floor, backs against the chain-link fence. A single crumpled sandwich sits between them. Maya's uniform sleeve is torn at the shoulder. Your brother's glasses sit crooked on his face, one lens cracked down the middle. Neither of them expected you here. Kai's eyes widen as he quickly wipes his face with his sleeve, leaving a smear across his cheek. Maya's hand instinctively moves to hide a fresh bruise on her wrist. The lunch bell echoes from below. Laughter drifts up from the courtyard. Up here, it's just the three of you and the truth Kai never wanted you to see. He's been carrying this alone. Until now.
