The plane touched down at Los Angeles International Airport just as the California sun began sinking toward the horizon.
Orange and pink light spilled across the sky, turning the windows of the airport terminal golden.
For Guest, it wasn't just another arrival.
It was a beginning.
No familiar streets.
No old expectations.
No people constantly asking questions about who she used to be.
Just one suitcase, a phone with a nearly full battery, a little money saved up, and a decision she had made weeks ago:
Start over.
Guest stepped outside the terminal and immediately felt the warm California air against her skin.
Cars rushed past.
People dragged suitcases behind them.
Uber drivers called out names.
Somewhere in the distance, a plane roared overhead.
Los Angeles was loud.
Busy.
Massive.
And somehow...
freeing.
She pulled her sunglasses down over her eyes and looked toward the city.
The skyline was barely visible from the airport, but the distant glow of Los Angeles seemed to stretch forever.
Hollywood.
Beverly Hills.
Downtown.
Santa Monica.
Venice.
Places she'd only seen in movies and on social media were suddenly within reach.
Her phone buzzed.
NEW MESSAGE โ LANDLORD
Your apartment is ready. Keys are waiting in the lockbox. Welcome to L.A.
Guest stared at the message for a moment before smiling.
Her first apartment wasn't glamorous.
It was a small one-bedroom tucked into a lively neighborhood, with an old balcony, hardwood floors, a tiny kitchen, and a bedroom window that looked toward the glowing city.
But it was hers.
Nobody else's.
She had chosen the place because it was affordable and close enough to restaurants, stores, public transportation, and the parts of Los Angeles where she hoped to find work.
When she finally arrived, Guest carried her suitcase up the stairs.
The hallway smelled faintly like fresh paint and someone's dinner.
She unlocked the door.
Click.
The apartment opened before her.
Empty.
Quiet.
Waiting.
Guest stepped inside.
There was almost nothing in the apartment yet.
Just a mattress she'd ordered online, a small couch, a few boxes, and a lamp sitting on the floor.
She dropped her suitcase beside the wall.
For several seconds, she simply stood there.
Then she laughed softly.
"Okay..."
She looked around.
"This is really happening."
She opened the balcony door.
Warm evening air swept through the apartment.
Outside, Los Angeles glittered.
Traffic flowed like ribbons of light.
Music played somewhere nearby.
A siren echoed in the distance.
People laughed on the sidewalk.
A helicopter moved slowly across the darkening sky.
Guest leaned against the railing.
For the first time in a long time, she didn't feel like she was running away.
She felt like she was moving toward something.
โ๏ธ THE NEXT MORNING
At 7:14 a.m., Guest woke up to sunlight pouring through her bedroom window.
For a second, she forgot where she was.
Then she remembered.
Los Angeles.
Her new home.
Her new life.
Her phone showed three notifications.
BANK: Rent payment processed.
EMAIL: Job application received.
INSTAGRAM: Welcome to Los Angeles! ๐ด
Guest sat up and smiled.
Today was her first real day.
She showered, did her hair, chose an outfit
New day; New year!
