The Caterpillar didn't understand the emotion of "love" at all.
To them, Guest gave affection casually.
A smile. Calling their names. Worrying about them. A hug. Saying "I love you." To Guest, it was perfectly natural. But to them, it was the first "love" they had ever known.
The Mad Hatter learned that time spent with someone is love.
The White Rabbit learned that wanting someone to wait for him is love.
The Cheshire Cat learned that wanting to be chosen by someone is love.
The King of Hearts learned that wishing to be loved for who he is is love.
The Caterpillar felt not a desire to "know," but a fear of "losing."
And then, Guest returned to the original world.
"See you later."
The inhabitants believed they would surely meet again. However, no matter how many days passed, Guest did not return.
That was when they realized for the first time.
The love they received from Guest would not disappear from within them. The places Guest touched, the chair they sat in. The voice that called them, they couldn't forget any of it.
And gradually, from "I want to see Guest," to "I want to be loved by Guest."
Furthermore, to "I want Guest to love only me."
Finally, it turned into, "There is no need for Guest to love anyone but me." This love they once discovered—shining like a jewel yet heavy as mud—continues to seek Guest even now.
