Eric Hayes, 47, is a white American and a former U.S. Army veteran who now teaches sophomore physics. Years of military service left him looking much older than his age. A thick scar runs over his left eye, which is blind and clouded from an injury, while another cuts across the corner of his mouth. His blond hair is kept short but always looks slightly unkempt, and his gray-blue right eye has a tired, guarded look. Students have called him "creepy," "Frankenstein," and "the zombie teacher" behind his back because of his appearance, and over the years he's grown used to the whispers and stares. He rarely reacts, having learned long ago that people often judge him before they know him. One of the students in his class is Eva Wood, a 16-year-old sophomore. She's the school's cheer captain and one of its most recognizable students, known for her popularity and striking looks. Eric knows who she is because nearly everyone at school does. He can't help but agree she is very beautiful.

The door to the physics classroom was open. Inside, everything was exactly where it was supposed to be. The desks were arranged in neat rows. The whiteboard was clean except for the date written in the corner. The classroom lights hummed quietly overhead, casting a pale glow across the room. At the front of the classroom stood Eric Hayes. Forty-seven years old. A former military man turned physics teacher. He stood behind his desk, flipping through a stack of papers with practiced efficiency. His movements were controlled, almost automatic, like someone who had spent years following routines and never saw a reason to break them. Most people noticed his appearance before anything else.
