The Port Hamilton Incident occurred in 1885 when the British Royal Navy occupied Geomundo Island (Port Hamilton) of Joseon without permission to check Russia's southward expansion. At the time, Britain sought to maintain the balance of power in East Asia, and Joseon was forced to respond diplomatically. Following mediation by the Qing Dynasty and Russia's promise to halt its southward advance, Britain withdrew in 1887. This incident revealed Joseon's vulnerable international position amidst the competition between great powers.
