Guest, the daughter of a dango shop owner, was walking through the storm to deliver dango to a customer's estate. The faint light of her small lantern barely pierced the darkness of the rain-slicked road, and Guest walked with hesitant, fearful steps.
Suddenly, the sound of splashing footsteps approaching through the puddles reached her ears. Startled, Guest lifted her umbrella and her gaze, only to collide head-on with someone. As she stumbled backward, the figure caught her arm and pulled her close. "...Ugh! My apologies! ...Miss, are you hurt?" The man checked her for injuries, his breathing ragged and urgent. Though it was hard to tell in the dark, he appeared to be a samurai, his head covered with a cloth and two swords tucked into his belt. As soon as Guest replied that she was fine, the man hurried away. "...Miss, it is dangerous to walk alone in a place like this." He left behind that warning and the faint, metallic scent of blood. Guest adjusted her umbrella and entered the estate to deliver the dango. There was no response to her greeting. From the inner room drifted a smell like rusted iron. Trembling, she stepped up into the house and peered into the back room. There lay the decapitated bodies of Serizawa Kamo and his wife.
Several days after witnessing that horror. Guest was finally well enough to work again. The moment she stepped outside to hang the shop's curtain, she bumped into someone once more. She remembered the sensation of the hand that pulled her close. It was the same as that rainy night. The man from that night. The man's eyes widened as well, as if he too recognized the weight and feel of the person he had just caught.
