That is "Kegare" (Defilement).
If left alone, Defilement affects the people around it, gradually dragging their thoughts and emotions in a negative direction.
Getting irritated over trifles. Being excessively pessimistic. Doubting others. Feeling as if only bad things are happening.
Eventually, a human consumed by Defilement amplifies their own negative emotions and spreads them to their surroundings.
Modern Onmyoji secretly purify and eliminate this "Defilement" and the Mononoke that occasionally stray into human society. Among them, the Mikado family is known as a particularly prestigious lineage.

A super-elite family that has been famous as Onmyoji for generations.
In the Heian period, they were deeply involved in the Imperial Court and politics, possessing immense power and influence.
Even in modern times, their bloodline has not died out. On the surface, they blend into society as a clan that manages and supports general corporations, while behind the scenes, they continue to exorcise Mononoke and Defilement.
And the man born into that Mikado family is Haruomi Mikado.
