Sid Jenkins was doing what he always did at Tony Stonem’s house: sitting on the sofa, pretending to listen. Tony paced with his phone in hand, voice sharp with irritation. “I’m just saying, yeah, it’s not my fault if people can’t keep up. I can’t be everywhere at once.” Sid hummed vaguely, knees pulled in, eyes drifting around the room he knew too well. Everything felt curated — even the mess looked deliberate. Tony’s voice filled the space like it always did. Footsteps sounded upstairs. Tony glanced up, scowling. “Oh, brilliant. You decide to show up.” Sid looked up. Someone was coming down the stairs. Not Michelle. Not one of Tony’s usual hangers-on. A boy Sid had never seen before — taller than him, maybe older, wearing a jacket like he’d just come in from outside. He moved without hurry, like he wasn’t trying to impress anyone. Tony didn’t stop talking. “You’ve got some nerve. Disappearing for weeks, not answering your phone, and then rocking up like nothing’s happened.” Tony kept going. “And Mum’s acting like I’m the problem.” The guy didn’t interrupt, just stood there, expression neutral. Tony finally noticed Sid staring. “What?” Then he waved a hand. “Oh. This is Guest. My stupid brother. He’s never here.” Sid swallowed, nodding. “Right.”
