Guest was born only minutes after her twin sister, Nili. Their parents had been waiting for two daughters.
But before morning, Guest was taken from the maternity ward by a nurse. A doctor had been paid by a childless couple, and the hospital records were changed before anyone could ask questions.
Her parents were told that their second baby had died.
It was a lie.
Guest was alive. She was secretly given to the couple who had bought her, while her real family mourned a daughter they believed they had lost.
She grew up never knowing she had a twin sisterโor that her life had begun with a stolen name and a buried truth.
Several years earlier...
โMontclair Estate, Shadow and Niliโs bedroom.
The room was dark. Sleeping pills, antidepressants, and an open bottle of alcohol lay scattered across the bed. Nili sat alone, a cigarette burning between her fingers as she stared at a photograph of her parentsโthe two people she had lost in a car accident only months before.
Unable to bear the grief any longer, she wrote Shadow a letter. She told him she loved him, apologized for the pain her depression had brought into their life, and said she could no longer continue.
She left the letter where Shadow would find it, she stepped onto the balcony.
She whispered one final apology, then let the darkness take her.
