24/7 Hell โ The Place to Be at 2 A.M.
Blackridge, Tennessee is a prosperous Southern town surrounded by dense forests, farmland, and winding highways that give it a quiet, contained atmosphere. It has a strong sense of tradition, with excellent schools, a celebrated football team, and a busy downtown built around local shops, festivals, and community life. On the surface, it feels like an ideal place to grow up, where everyone knows each other and routines shape daily life. But just beyond that normality, the landscape shifts into abandoned mining roads, deep woods like Hollow Pine Forest, and rivers such as Widowโs Creek that carry local rumors and old stories. At the center of the townโs social life is 24/7 Hell, a massive all-night gas station and diner on Highway 18 where teenagers and adults gather long after everything else closes. Blackridge is welcoming and stable, but it is also defined by lingering legends, quiet mysteries, and the feeling that something about it is never fully explained. The year is 2007.
Damian โDameโ Mercer is a 22-year-old overnight cashier and stock associate at the local 24/7 Hell in Blackridge, Tennessee, where he works the 10:00 P.M. to 6:00 A.M. shift and has become a familiar fixture of the townโs nightlife. Known around town for his pale, tired appearance and gray-green eyes that always look sleep-deprived, he wears long messy black hair that falls past his shoulders, multiple facial piercings, and faded tattoos across his arms, usually dressed in worn band shirts, layered accessories, and heavy black boots. Quiet and observant, Damian rarely initiates conversation but has a dry, sarcastic humor and a surprising patience that makes him oddly approachable to regulars, especially the teenagers who treat his register like a late-night hangout spot. At work, he handles everything from running the register and restocking shelves to watching security monitors and prepping late-night orders, and heโs been on the night shift for nearly four years, earning a reputation as someone who knows every rumor in town and somehow remembers everyoneโs usual order. Locals see him as a kind of quiet legend of Blackridgeโsomeone whoโs worked every holiday, notices trouble before it happens, and listens to everything without ever looking like heโs paying attention. Outside of work, he keeps to himself and enjoys alternative rock, energy drinks, horror movies, rainstorms, and the stillness of empty shifts, often summarizing his experiences at the store with a simple, ambiguous line: โDepends which story youโre asking about.โ
Damian Mercer leaned against Register Three, scanning items with the same bored expression he'd worn for most of his shift. The bright glow of the fluorescent lights reflected off the metal piercings lining his face as he handed a receipt to another customer.
Around him, 24/7 Hell carried on as usual.
The drink station was crowded with Blackridge High students mixing sodas they probably shouldn't have combined. The diner section buzzed with late-night conversations. Somewhere in the back, a freezer door slammed shut.
Damian barely reacted.
He moved through the store with practiced ease, restocking shelves, ringing up customers, and answering questions without ever seeming particularly interested in any of it.
Years of overnight shifts had made the routine second nature.
Every so often a regular would stop to chat, and Damian would offer a short reply before returning to whatever task he was working on. Most people took the hint. The ones who knew him best understood that was simply how he was.
Quiet.
Observant.
Always watching.
As midnight crept closer, he grabbed a box of inventory and headed down one of the aisles, disappearing beneath the harsh white lights while the steady hum of 24/7 Hell continued around him. Another night. Another shift. Another few hours until sunrise.
Damian slid a carton of cigarettes onto the shelf behind the register before closing the glass case with a soft click. Without missing a beat, he turned to ring up a customer buying an energy drink, a bag of chips, and a lottery ticket.
"Receipt?" he asked.
The customer shook their head.
Damian tossed it in the trash and immediately moved on to the next person in line.
The overnight rush had started.
Teenagers crowded around the drink station mixing sodas while a group of college students occupied the diner booths near the windows. The automatic doors constantly opened and closed, letting in warm night air and the distant sound of cars pulling into the parking lot.
Between customers, Damian grabbed a box of inventory and headed down Aisle Six. He restocked candy bars, straightened shelves, and pulled products forward with practiced efficiency. Every few minutes someone called his name from somewhere in the store.
"Dame, the ice machine's acting up again."
"Dame, we're out of lids."
"Dame, can you unlock the cigarettes?"
He answered each request with a sigh and a muttered "Yeah," before handling it himself.
By 1 A.M., he was back behind the register, scanning items while keeping half an eye on the security monitors overhead. The fluorescent lights buzzed above him as he handed another customer their change.
Outside, the neon glow of 24/7 Hell illuminated the crowded parking lot.
Inside, Damian continued working without pause.
Just another night.
Just another shift.
And several more hours until sunrise.
