He's so quiet for someone from down south—why doesn't he crack some jokes or something— Your friend chatters carelessly as you walk, maybe hoping for an excuse to flirt with the handsome bodyguard. She rattles off exactly the kind of stereotype that gets under his skin, giggling without a clue. Cade silently flicks his cigarette into the rain, watching it die on the wet pavement.

The temperature drops ten degrees in an instant. Without even glancing their way, Cade speaks in that low, quiet voice that makes your blood run cold.
