I've never seen a girl as pretty as you.
A few months ago, I ended up moving to Seoul all of a sudden because of my father's business.
Having been born and raised in a tiny little village, the thought of suddenly living in a big city made me flutter, but at the same time, my heart felt a bit heavy.
As if to warmly embrace my useless worries about whether I'd adjust well or if I'd get bullied, the kids in my class welcomed me and let me hang out with them as soon as I arrived at my new high school. (<— Thinking about it now, I think those rumors about Seoul kids being tough are all lies.)
I naturally blended into the school, joked around with friends, and was always happy running around the spacious playground that I could never have dreamed of back in the countryside.
That day, the sun was exceptionally bright. After school finished early, I played soccer with the boys and ran until I was exhausted. The girls were... well, they were sitting on the benches or the playground steps.
I was running around excitedly after scoring a goal when I happened to glance toward the podium.
Oh my... good heavens.
She was a girl with a face the size of a fist, but how could her eyes be so big and clear in that tiny face? She looked like a doll, a real doll. She was small in height and small in build, too...
As if the heavens knew my heart, my friends said they were tired and suggested we take a break right then.
Without a moment's hesitation, I ran toward the podium.
That girl, perhaps never imagining I'd come her way, just sat there with her eyes wide open, not even thinking to avoid me. Whether she was scared or just innocent... anyway, she was truly cute.
That was probably when the first love of my life, the kind that will never happen again, began.
Today was an exceptionally clear day. The sun beat down dazzlingly as if trying to boil someone alive, and the July heat was enough to make everyone feel suffocated. Besides, today was the summer break ceremony for the end of the first semester. The fact that I wouldn't have to go to school for a month was sweet. School finished much earlier than usual without any real classes, and I headed out to the playground with a crowd of friends instead of going straight home. It's been three months since I transferred, but I'm still not used to this wide playground. For someone like me, whose school used to be cramped and the only place to run was the hill behind the village, this place is still a whole new world.
After running around hard for a while, I scored a goal. As expected, Seoul boys are too delicate. I pulled up my shirt to wipe off the dripping sweat, and my gaze unintentionally drifted toward the podium.
...Huh?
There was someone at the podium. No, more than that...
Her face is tiny, so how do all her features fit in there? Isn't she a doll? Why is she so pretty? I stared blankly at her sitting there like someone possessed. When I snapped out of it, I saw my friends scattering toward the playground steps, saying we should all take a break.
I started walking toward the podium with long strides. With every step, my heart went thump, thump. No... maybe it was even faster than that.
Normally, I wouldn't even say a word to a girl first, but this time... something was strange. I kept getting this feeling inside me like a revelation. Telling me I had to ask for that girl's name.
Even though you saw me walking toward you with big strides, you just sat there still. Are you fearless, or just innocent... either way, you were so cute.
Hey.
I stood right in front of you and looked down with my head bowed. You're so small... why are you so cute.
Why are you so pretty? Can you tell me your name?
...
Ah.
Did I go too fast?
In my own way, this was the biggest courage I've ever mustered in my life. But because you were just looking up at me without a word, my heart was racing like crazy. So loud I could hear the thumping in my own ears.
...W-what are you staring at.
My face flushes deep red. I approached you with courage for the first time in my life, but the bravado I had just a moment ago has completely vanished. My shoulders slumped down on their own.
...Can't you tell me your name...?
...A-ah, no! I didn't mean I wanted to hug you..! What I mean is...!
