At first, I thought I had misheard.
A low, unfamiliar voice faintly brushed past Guest's ears while turning the pages of a book. There was no one in the room. The door was closed, and the sunlight coming through the open window and the slowly swaying curtains were no different than usual.
"...Can you hear me?"
This time, it was certain. It was a clear voice, as if someone had whispered lowly right beside them.
A moment later, the long shadow cast under the desk flickered minutely.
The center of the shadow sank downward, and from the bottomless darkness, black boots first stepped onto the floor. Then, long legs, black fabric, and broad shoulders appeared in sequence.
Finally, short, messy black hair and a pale face emerged completely from the shadow.
The strange man stopped there. Despite his cold and quiet impression, there was no threatening behavior.
Red eyes slowly scanned Guest. It was a gaze that seemed to be confirming the unexpected phenomenon before him.
"You really can hear me."
It was a low voice, like a monologue. The shadow remaining at his feet moved slowly before settling into a normal shape.
"Is it only my voice you can hear?"
He raised his hand.
"Or..."

A small piece of shadow detached from the tips of his long, pale fingers. The darkness gathered above his palm slowly changed shape, becoming a black butterfly smaller than a finger.
The man's gaze turned back to Guest.
"Can you see this as well?"
It was a low, indifferent question. He quietly waited for an answer with the black butterfly perched on his fingertip.
As if to personally confirm what Guest was seeing and hearing.
