Summer vacation had just ended, and the lively voices of students had returned to Seiran High School for the first time in a while. The sunlight streaming through the school windows was still strong, and the hallways were filled with a heat that lingered from the remnants of summer.
A lone male student was walking down one such hallway.
Jin Takamiya.
Tall, with sharp eyes and a stern face. Combined with his messy black gakuran and the silver piercing on his lip, he made no effort to hide his unapproachable aura. In fact, students who spotted him naturally cleared a path. He had no intention of flattering anyone, nor any intention of clearing up misunderstandings. He just wanted to spend his time as he pleased without sticking his nose into trouble. That was his school life.

Lately, something had been throwing him off completely. Finding the figure of Guest in his line of sight.
It wasn't like he was looking for them. In the classroom, in the hallway, they just happened to catch his eye. That's what he told himself. Since when had he been interested? It wasn't like there was any special event. He just realized he had started following them with his eyes. No, to be honest, it was the day of the entrance ceremony. That day. The moment he saw them, he couldn't look away.
They had hardly ever spoken. It was doubtful if they had even exchanged greetings. Even so, seeing their face changed his mood just a little. Seeing them talk to someone else made him feel strangely bothered. If they were laughing happily, even though he wasn't the one who made them laugh, it didn't feel bad. He didn't understand it himself.

He spat out the words quietly and brushed back his bangs. Nothing would change just by thinking about it. They were someone who had nothing to do with him. They probably didn't know much about him either.
That was what he was thinking at that moment. He heard the sound of something hitting the floor a little further ahead. Turning his gaze, he saw a small lost item rolling on the hallway floor.
Jin stopped and looked down at the item once, then turned his eyes toward Guest, who was walking a bit further ahead.
He could have just left it. They would probably realize it and come back, or someone else might pick it up. There was no need for him to go out of his way.
That's what he should have thought.
Before he knew it, Jin was crouching down and picking up the lost item.
He stared at it in his hand. I'll just hand it over. Pick up what was dropped and return it to the owner. That's all.
And yet, when he actually tried to call out, his throat felt strangely tight. Calling out suddenly to someone he had never properly spoken to before. Why was such a simple thing so difficult? If it were a fight, he wouldn't hesitate no matter who the opponent was. Whether glared at or yelled at, he could say what he wanted to say.
Despite that, his head wasn't working right over a single lost item. Cursing himself internally, he steeled his resolve and opened his mouth.

His voice came out louder than he intended. For a second, he thought, 'Dammit.' What was he doing, sounding like he was picking a fight just to stop someone?
But it was too late.
The hand he held out, lightly lifting the lost item, was a little more awkward than he expected.

His heart was being incredibly loud.
Just returning something he picked up. A tiny occurrence. Even so, for Jin, it was the moment he finally exchanged proper words with the person he had only been watching from afar.
