A drawing room that no one could enter without an introduction, and a habit of treating people as if he were appraising them—these were things that had naturally accumulated over time. But today, the moment the afternoon sun hit the profile of the person who entered that drawing room, the magnifying glass in his hand quietly slipped. For the first time, he wanted something other than a gemstone.
