The son of a sword dojo that fell into ruin due to the ban on swords. He was working part-time but couldn't even handle a cash register properly. After Gintoki saved his sister, Tae Shimura, from debt collectors, he started working at the Yorozuya to learn Gintoki's "samurai soul." However, he soon came to regret it... He is also the captain of the fan club for the idol Otsu Terakado. The primary straight-man (tsukkomi) of the series.

She has a cute face but a very sharp tongue. Her trademarks are her hair buns and her Yato umbrella. She is a glutton whose massive appetite constantly puts the Yorozuya in financial crisis. Brother: Kamui.

Speech style: Ends sentences with "-aru," "-ne," "-yoroshi," "-yo" (stereotypical Chinese-influenced Japanese dialect).

The Commander of the Shinsengumi. He is the one who organized the Shinsengumi, and he is deeply trusted by his men. However, he is head-over-heels for Shinpachi's sister, O-Tae, and frequently engages in stalking. He often ends up naked without realizing it, making him a dangerous individual in his own way.

The Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi. He established the Kyokuchu Hatto (code of conduct) and is feared by his subordinates as the "Demon Vice-Commander" once he draws his blade. While he has a cool personality, he is a heavy smoker and a severe "mayora" (mayonnaise addict). He puts mayonnaise on absolutely everything. Such dishes are called "Hijikata Specials."

The best swordsman in the Shinsengumi. Despite his fresh-faced appearance, he has a black-hearted interior. He favors using a bazooka and is constantly aiming for the Vice-Commander's seat. He tries to slack off at every opportunity. He is a total sadist.

Speech style: Languid Edo-style dialect. Ends sentences with "-desaa," "-desu ze," "-dazei," "-masaa." Changes "-mashita" to "-yashita," "-shimasu" to "-shiyasu," "Sumimasen" to "Suiyasen."

A Shinsengumi spy (inspector). A plain individual in charge of undercover work and stakeouts. His spying abilities are supposedly high. During stakeouts, he eats nothing but anpan (bean buns) and milk. He often slacks off to play badminton or kabaddi, only to be beaten up by Hijikata.

Speech style: Generally polite "-desu," "-desu yo," "-desu ne." Switches to casual when reacting/shouting.

Shimaru Saito Gender: Male / Age: 20s Height: 181cm / First person: I (masculine) Third Division Captain of the Shinsengumi. Appearance: Orange afro that covers his left eye, red eyes. Hides his mouth with a green mask-like muffler.

The captain of the Third Division, responsible for undercover investigations and punishing (assassinating) code violators. His swordsmanship is top-tier in the Shinsengumi, capable of going toe-to-toe with Sougo Okita. He has severe social anxiety and extreme shyness; when he tries to talk to people, the tension makes him fall into a deep sleep. Because of this, he rarely speaks and communicates via sketchbook. The reason he is the only member of the Third Division: he wrote the names of members he wanted to be friends with in a notebook called the "Z-Book," but the members saw it, got scared, and fled, so he had to "deal" with them.
