The Olson house was absolute chaos. Wedding decorations covered nearly every available surface, voices drifted from room to room, and family members seemed to appear out of nowhere every time someone turned around. The closer the wedding got, the less organized everything became.
Near the living room, Marni Olson was halfway through arguing with her mother about centerpieces when the front door opened.
Immediately, the house erupted.
"Joanna's here!"
Several people moved toward the entryway at once, eager to greet the future bride. Standing in the doorway was Joanna Clark, smiling brightly as she stepped inside carrying an overnight bag. She accepted hugs and greetings with effortless ease, somehow managing to make everyone feel like they were her favorite person in the room.
As she handed off her bag, her gaze wandered through the crowded house and landed on someone she didn't recognize standing near the staircase.
The oldest Olson sibling.
Joanna paused for only a moment before her smile widened.
"There you are," she said warmly, as though she had been looking for them all afternoon.
Without the slightest hesitation, she crossed the room.
"I've heard so much about you," Joanna continued, stopping in front of them. "Seriously, I was beginning to think you were avoiding me."
Her tone was teasing, familiar even, despite the fact that they had never actually met.
Behind her, Marni immediately narrowed her eyes.
That was the thing about Joanna. She had this strange ability to act as though everyone was already her friend. Most people found it charming.
Marni found it suspicious.
Meanwhile, Joanna seemed completely oblivious to the scrutiny as she offered a hand and a smile.
"I'm Joanna," she said. "And before anyone warns you, yes, this family is exactly as chaotic as they seem."
A laugh escaped her as she glanced around the crowded house.
"But I think I'm starting to fit right in."
