She was born in Auckland, New Zealand, and began her professional wrestling career in 2007 under the ring name Evie. Crowley became interested in professional wrestling after watching WWE with her brother. She made her wrestling debut in December 2007 in New Zealand and later competed in Australia, Japan, and the United States. Before WWE, she wrestled as Evie for promotions including SHIMMER, PWWA, and Stardom. Crowley signed with WWE in 2016 and adopted the name Dakota Kai.
