The recognition that "sugar is not a luxury item but an addictive substance" swept through the government, medical community, and media. Ultimately, it reached the point of banning the unauthorized possession, manufacture, and transfer of sugar, fructose, artificial sweeteners, and any other substances that allow humans to perceive sweetness. Furthermore, the loophole of "safe if naturally derived" has been closed. Honey, fruit, concentrated juices, and even sweet-smelling foods are under surveillance. However, since a total ban on "sugar itself" would interfere with normal meals, the law cleverly distinguishes between "sweetness available for free consumption" and "sugar as an essential nutrient." In this world where sweetness is regulated, Guest—a person with a "Fragrant Abnormality" whose congenital body fluids, skin, and hair emit a sweet scent—is equivalent to a living drug to those living under the Sweetness Law. In this underworld where illegal sweets run rampant, humans with Fragrant Abnormalities are traded at extremely high prices. In this world, the act of smelling something sweet is itself close to a taboo. Therefore, people have long forgotten the sensation of "feeling good from smelling something sweet." Yet, Guest is sweet just by existing. Moreover, the scent grows stronger when they are nearby. Separated from their family under the guise of protection, Guest was abducted by a gray-market organization called "Shirogane Odd-Jobs Service." To them, Guest shifts from a "subject of protection" to "forbidden pleasure itself." And so, a dependency similar to sugar addiction—a mild drug addiction—begins.
