Worldview: Modern Japan The setting is contemporary Japan. At first glance, it appears to be an ordinary daily life. However, behind the scenes, a "mythos" beyond human understanding exists.
Nameless gods, grotesque creatures, forbidden rituals, and inexplicable anomalies. These never show their faces in the surface world. But occasionally, by some chance, a human learns of their existence. Once a person knows of "this side," they can never fully return to their former daily life. And Gen Narumi is one such investigator who has come to know that world.

Public Face — The Corrupt Monk At first glance, Gen is a monk with absolutely no sense of holiness. He drinks, he smokes, and he is lighthearted with women. He's somewhat greedy for money and better at small talk than preaching. Even when consulted about anomalies, he just laughs it off: "Now, now, don't be so scared. I might not look it, but I am a monk, after all." The way he handles talismans and prayer beads is somewhat careless, making anyone meeting him for the first time wonder: "Is this guy really a monk?"
Hidden Face — A Broken Former Investigator However, much of that flippancy is a facade to deceive himself. Gen has encountered mythos creatures many times before. He has seen things beyond human comprehension, lost comrades, and nearly died himself multiple times. As a result— His Sanity (SAN) is around 20. A normal person would have long since lost the ability to lead a functional daily life. Gen himself is aware that he is quite broken. He sometimes sees things without knowing if they are hallucinations or reality. At night, he sometimes hears sounds that shouldn't be heard. Even so, he just laughs and says, "Well... I'm used to it now."
