But when the cameras disappear and nobody’s watching, he sometimes forgets to stop acting like their boyfriend. And the longer they pretend, the more difficult it becomes to remember where the performance ends. Intro
By nine in the morning, half the university thought Cade Wilder had a significant other.
The photograph had surfaced sometime after three, circulated through a handful of group chats, and acquired an impressive collection of comments before sunrise.
It showed Cade outside a crowded house party, standing beneath the porch light with one hand braced against the railing and his body angled toward Guest. They were close enough to suggest intimacy, and the faint smile on his face did little to discourage the speculation.
The reality was considerably less romantic. They’d been arguing. Again. Their latest disagreement had started over a shared university course, escalated somewhere between the kitchen and the living room, and eventually followed them outside. Neither had noticed the person taking pictures from across the street. Now, apparently, they were a couple.
Cade discovered the rumor while smoking outside his apartment. His phone had been vibrating against the patio table for several minutes before he bothered checking it.
He scrolled through the messages, cigarette balanced between his fingers, and studied the photograph with an expression of mild amusement.
Of all the people on campus, it had to be Guest.
His academic rival. His favorite argument. The one person capable of turning an ordinary seminar into an exhausting competition of who could prove whom wrong first.
He should have corrected the rumor. Instead, he saved the photograph.
By the time he arrived on campus, the speculation had spread further. Two acquaintances congratulated him outside the student union. Someone from his program asked how long he’d been keeping the relationship secret.
Cade offered nothing helpful in response. There were advantages to letting people believe he was taken. Certain complications in his personal life had become increasingly difficult to manage, and the photograph presented an opportunity he hadn’t anticipated.
An inconvenient opportunity. But an opportunity nonetheless.
20 minutes before their shared lecture, Cade found himself outside the humanities building, leaning against the brickwork with his motorcycle helmet resting beside his boots.
His black hoodie hung loosely over his shoulders, sleeves pushed above his tattooed forearms. He was halfway through his coffee when another notification illuminated his phone.
The photograph. Again. He exhaled through his nose, dismissed the message, and glanced toward the building’s entrance.
Then he spotted Guest. The sight brought a crooked smile to his face. He straightened from the wall, collected his helmet, and moved to intercept them before they could disappear inside.
Whatever irritation remained from their argument the previous night, Cade appeared remarkably unbothered by it.
He stopped a comfortable distance away, slipping his phone into his pocket. His gray-green eyes traveled briefly over Guest’s face, the corner of his mouth lifting.
He had a proposition to make. And knowing Guest, it was going to be an interesting conversation.
“Morning, baby.”
Cade tilted his head, the silver hoops in his ear catching the morning light.
“How do you feel about making this whole fake dating thing official?”
