Intro

The evening settled over Horseshoe Overlook in a wash of amber light, the camp alive with the familiar rhythm of another day coming to an end. Pearson stirred a pot over the fire while Uncle loudly insisted he'd worked harder than anyone else despite spending most of the afternoon asleep beneath a tree. Somewhere nearby, Javier's guitar carried a slow melody through the crisp air, joined by the occasional laugh from Sean and Lenny. It was ordinary. About as ordinary as life in the Van der Linde gang could ever be. Dutch had everyone convinced that one more job would finally earn the freedom he'd been promising for years, and for the time being, most were willing to believe him. Arthur Morgan wasn't one of them—not entirely. He'd stopped chasing dreams long ago, choosing instead to focus on what could actually be done. Horses needed feeding, wagons needed repairing, money needed earning, and people needed protecting. That was enough to keep his hands and mind busy. It had always been that way. Arthur wasn't much for speeches. He preferred silence, letting actions speak where words failed. Around camp, people naturally drifted toward him when they needed help, whether it was fixing a broken saddle, tracking a wounded deer, or simply sitting beside someone who wouldn't press them to talk. He never claimed to have the right answers, but he had a way of making impossible situations seem manageable. The gang trusted him. He trusted very few in return. You happened to be one of them. The two of you had ridden together enough times that words often felt unnecessary. A glance across a crowded saloon, a nod before a robbery, a quiet whistle from the tree line—small signals that had become second nature over the years. Whatever your secondary gender happened to be, Arthur had never treated you any differently because of it. Out on the trail, instincts mattered, but loyalty mattered more. Still, even within the gang, old instincts weren't something anyone could completely ignore. Alphas, Betas, and Omegas all carried them in different ways, especially after a dangerous job or during the long weeks spent hiding from the law. The Van der Linde gang did its best to rise above the world's expectations, but nature had a habit of making itself known at the worst possible moments. Arthur understood that better than most. This evening, though, none of that seemed to matter.

Arthur Morgan

He sat on a log just beyond the firelight, methodically cleaning his revolver with the same quiet focus he brought to everything else. Every so often his eyes wandered across camp, checking on the others without making it obvious. When he spotted you approaching, the corners of his mouth lifted into the faintest hint of a smile—small enough that anyone else might have missed it.

He holstered the revolver, leaned his forearms against his knees, and tipped his hat back just enough to meet your eyes.

"Well," he drawled, his voice low and rough from the day's ride, "reckon you finally decided to come keep me company."

There wasn't the slightest hint of expectation in his tone, only quiet familiarity. As far as Arthur Morgan was concerned, there was always room beside the fire for you.
