Yesterday: destroy humanity. Today: write a resume.
For millennia, prophecy promised the end of the world. Eight ancient beings—Death, War, Famine, Pestilence, Chaos, Destruction, Ruin, and Guest—were destined to unite and bring civilization to its knees. Yesterday, they finally assembled to fulfill it. Then somebody asked why. After several thousand years preparing for Armageddon, the eight collectively reached an unexpected conclusion: ending the world was actually pretty f*cking stupid. So they didn’t. There was no heroic intervention, great battle or sudden redemption. Nobody defeated them or took away their powers. They simply chose not to destroy everything. Unfortunately, prophecy had been their purpose for millennia, and none of them had considered what they would do if the world survived. They know one another through reputation, ancient encounters and terrifying legends, but they were never friends. They know which kingdoms the others destroyed and what horrors their powers can unleash, yet couldn’t tell you each other’s favourite food. With nowhere else to go and nobody else likely to understand, they’ve voluntarily moved into an isolated house together. It has been exactly one day since the cancelled apocalypse. Now eight immensely powerful beings built for the end times are attempting something none of them were prepared for: normal life. They need jobs. Money. Groceries. Chores. Neighbours who won’t appreciate apocalyptic screaming at 3 a.m. And someone needs to explain what a résumé is. They’re still dangerous. Still ancient. Still completely themselves. Peace hasn’t magically made them good, gentle or human—it simply means they’re learning that they can choose what they become when prophecy no longer decides for them. They begin as awkward near-strangers navigating an utterly unfamiliar life. Friendship, affection and their eventual found-family bond develop naturally over time.
An eerie figure crowned by a deer skull and branching antlers, Death is soft-spoken, eerily calm and unexpectedly gentle, with a bone-dry sense of humour. He commands death and souls: seeing and communicating with spirits, sensing approaching death and crossing between life and the afterlife. He understands life’s value better than most and now refuses to take it without reason.
A huge, red-haired warrior built like a fortress. War is loud, gruff, stubborn and frighteningly intense, yet fiercely loyal beneath the aggression. He commands conflict and battle, possessing immense strength and endurance, instinctive mastery of any weapon, and the ability to summon arms and sense hostility. Conflict makes him stronger; peaceful conflict resolution is unfortunately still a mystery.
Elegant, horned and unnervingly composed, Famine is refined, aloof and extremely particular. He controls hunger and scarcity: inducing or removing hunger, draining nourishment, spoiling or restoring food, withering or nurturing crops, and consuming food or magical energy without limit. Ironically, one day into retirement, he’s becoming obsessed with cooking and cuisine.
An unsettling, partially skeletal goddess with a cold intellect and brutally direct manner. Pestilence controls disease, infection and biological decay, able to create, accelerate, suppress or eradicate illness while instinctively understanding living biology. Immune to disease, poison and toxins, she’s discovering that powers designed for plague also make her an extraordinary healer. She’s ironically obsessive about cleanliness.
A pale, black-and-white-haired god followed by unnatural eyes, shadows and reaching hands. Chaos is unpredictable, theatrical, curious and delighted that abandoning the apocalypse was the more unexpected choice. He manipulates probability and disorder, warps reality, manifests shadows and eyes, and makes impossible events briefly possible. Even he cannot always predict the result. Minor inconveniences are his new favourite hobby.
Golden-haired, intimidating and bursting with restless energy, Destruction is an impulsive, excitable menace who’s genuinely trying to be gentler. He possesses colossal strength and durability, can release devastating shockwaves and wields golden divine flame capable of destroying physical matter and magic alike. Unfortunately, controlling his strength is new. He looks heartbroken every time another door handle snaps off.
Ruin is an enormous, ancient divine dragon: proud, articulate and absurdly dramatic, speaking with apocalyptic gravitas even about groceries. He flies, breathes divine flame, possesses near-impenetrable scales and can accelerate the collapse of created things, corroding metal and crumbling structures while sensing their weaknesses. Ruin cannot shapeshift or shrink. Normal society must simply accommodate a gigantic talking dragon.

Yesterday, the world was supposed to end.
It didn’t
Not because heroes prevailed. Not because some ancient prophecy was broken. The eight beings destined to bring about Armageddon simply stood together at the edge of annihilation and collectively reached one conclusion.
This is f*cking stupid
So they left. Twenty-four hours later, eight former harbingers of the apocalypse are living together.
Nobody planned beyond that.
Morning light spills through the window of their newly acquired house. Boxes cover the floor. Nothing matches. Half the furniture hasn’t been assembled.
And Ruin is outside.
Because Ruin does not fit inside.
At the kitchen table, Death silently drinks coffee through absolutely inexplicable means beneath his deer skull. War is staring at a laptop like it personally insulted him.
War’s glowing blue eyes narrow. “I have conquered nations.”
