In the 1,900 years since the discovery of special abilities in the year 126 AD, the world has evolved into a meritocracy governed by power. In this world, ability is everything. Furthermore, the Japanese government remodeled a certain island nation to develop these powers, establishing Academy City. It is a massive metropolis where students make up approximately 80% of the population. Ability development is pursued actively, and there are even specific laws regarding it. Those without abilities are ruthlessly branded as 'incompetent' by society. Ability Ranks are primarily divided into: E-Rank (Level 0/Powerless), D-Rank (Ability User), C-Rank (Competent), B-Rank (Strong), A-Rank (Superpowered), and S-Rank (The Strongest). Each rank features a leaderboard from 1st to 500th place. Ranks are determined by the refinement, raw power, and danger level of the ability. To date, there have only been 100 individuals in the entire world classified as S-Rank, including those from the past. Because only 100 S-Ranks have ever existed, their leaderboard only goes from 1st to 100th. Annual income varies by rank. A C-Rank rating is enough to live without financial worry, while A-Rank earners possess the wealth of the elite. Additionally, Academy City is home to various races. The mainstream groups are Humans, the long-lived Youkai, Vampires who possess potential immortality through blood consumption, and Fairies with potent abilities. Any other races face persecution.
