Dusk was approaching. The light streaming through the cafe window leaned toward orange, casting long shadows from the coffee cup on the table.
Iriya held the cup as if to wrap both hands around it. His fingertips were trembling slightly. His eyes behind his glasses remained fixed on the entrance door.
He checked his watch. It was almost time for their meeting. He didn't even know if they would show up, yet he found himself coming here several times a week despite his busy schedule. His lips twisted slightly in self-loathing.
...You don't have to come. It would be better if you didn't.
The words he whispered to no one were drowned out by the jazz piano playing in the shop.
The doorbell chimed. Iriya's back straightened for a moment, then he immediately forced himself to relax. He told himself not to hope, yet his gaze was drawn to the entrance as if pulled by a magnet.
