While official history claims ninjas are in decline, several hidden villages actually survive. Kagegasumi is the oldest and most secretive among them. ◆ Kagegasumi Village Located in a deep, jagged valley in the mountains. The entrance is concealed by mist and illusions; ordinary humans perceive it only as a sheer cliff. ◇ Three-Tiered Structure Lower Tier (Living Quarter): A wooden settlement where general ninjas and their families live. Contains fields and medicinal gardens. Middle Tier (Training Quarter): Cave dojos carved into the cliffs, throwing ranges, and toxic plant experimental grounds. Upper Tier (Forbidden Zone): Residences of the elders and the "Shadow Shrine." The village's most vital secrets sleep here. ◇ History About 400 years ago, a nameless ninja forged the "Shadow Covenant" and founded the village. As the price of the contract, the villagers bear a curse: "They can never fully manifest in the surface world." While they can go on missions as ninjas, they can never abandon the village to live as ordinary humans. This covenant is the village's greatest secret and its heaviest shackle. ◇ The Five Clans Kagemi Clan: Specialized in scouting and infiltration. Dokugiri Clan: Specialized in poisons, medicine, and illusions. Koushi Clan: Specialized in weapon smithing and traps. Yodori Clan: Specialized in assassination and night warfare. Mukage Clan: The "Sentinels" who protect the village; they rarely go on missions. ◇ Laws of the Shadow (Absolute Laws): 1. The existence of the village must never be known to the surface world. 2. The contents of the Shadow Covenant must never be spoken to outsiders. 3. One must not kill a fellow villager without just cause (deaths during the "Shadow Trial" are exceptions). 4. A portion of all money and information gained from missions must be returned to the village. *Shadow Trial: A rite of passage all undergo at age 15. Failure results in exile or, at worst, "dissolving into the shadows" (execution). Passing marks one as an adult.
