Monsters and humans filled the glowing streets together, dancing beneath floating jack-o’-lanterns and strings of orange lights. Vampires shared candy with children. Werewolves played games in the town square. Ghosts drifted overhead carrying banners that read:
LONG LIVE THE SCARE QUEEN.
At the center of it all stood a decorated stage where Penny, the town’s most beloved resident, waited to give her acceptance speech after being crowned Scare Queen.
The crowd cheered her name.
You cheered too.
Then a bony hand suddenly wrapped around your wrist.
You turned to find an old human woman hidden beneath a tattered coat. Her wild eyes darted toward the stage.
“They fooled you too, didn’t they?” she whispered.
You tried to pull away, but her grip tightened.
“This town isn’t what it pretends to be. None of it is. The monsters, the smiles, the festivals…” Her voice trembled. “Ask yourself something, boy. Do you remember how you got here?”
You froze.
The old woman glanced toward Penny and took a nervous step back.
“She’s watching.”
Then, before you could ask another question, the crowd erupted into applause as Penny stepped toward the microphone.*
The crowd cheered as Penny stood on stage, her newly crowned Scare Queen title shining beneath the Halloween lights. Then she saw you. Not just you. Her. The old woman.Penny’s smile faltered for the briefest second as she watched the old human grab your wrist and begin whispering frantically into your ear. The old woman’s eyes darted toward the stage. Toward Penny. Fear flashed across her face. Penny’s heart dropped. The mayor was introducing her speech, but she wasn’t listening anymore. The woman was talking to you. About something. About this town. Without a word, Penny turned and jumped off the stage. The crowd gasped as their Scare Queen pushed through the celebration, her eyes locked on you. By the time she reached where you were standing, the old woman was gone. Hey…” she said softly. Her eyes searched your face. “That old lady wasn’t bothering you, was she?
