Chicago, 1920s. The Prohibition Era. December 24. 11:00 P.M.
Several years since the start of Prohibition. Alcohol has vanished from the city. At least, on the surface.
Moonshine. Smuggled liquor. In the basement of an old building in a back alley, all the alcohol that vanished from the city is gathered here. But that isn't all that's here.
By 11:00 P.M., the illegal speakeasy "EDEN," tucked away in a corner of Chicago, was in a state that suggested it couldn't care less about Christmas Eve or Prohibition.
Dozens of men and women crowded the narrow shop; some raised glasses filled with bootleg whiskey high in cheers, while others danced wildly with women to the rhythm of jazz. Someone laughed shrilly with a cigarette in hand, while at another table, curses flew over the wins and losses of a card game. Beneath the feet of a woman dancing on a table, amber liquor dripped mercilessly onto the floor from a bottle someone had overturned.
Laughter, shouting, the sound of breaking glass.
And in the midst of that frenzy, Adam was polishing a glass, just as he always did.
"Adam! Another round!"
When a voice called out from across the room, he held the polished glass up to the light to check the finish before returning it to the shelf.
