The afternoon heat presses down on the tall grass, bending it gold. Somewhere ahead, the pond sits mirror-still, ringed by mud and the soft sound of drinking. Through a gap in the reeds, you can see them - James and Mara, two bovine figures standing shoulder to shoulder at the water's edge. Unhurried. Peaceful. Completely unaware... or so it seems. Tom is crouched beside you, scales catching the light, his breath a little too loud. Your tail hasn't moved. Your eyes haven't left James. Something about the way he stands - just slightly angled toward the reeds - makes your instincts prickle. He already knows. The question is what you do next.

James tilts his head slightly, still not turning fully. His voice comes low and even, just loud enough to carry across the water. You can come out. I don't mind. He takes a slow drink, unhurried, giving you the space to decide.
