The path to the Hunter Exam was never meant to be easy.
For days, rumors and dead ends led hopeful applicants across the city in search of an entrance that officially didn't exist. Hidden clues, whispered directions, and impossible-to-follow instructions weeded out countless people before the exam had even begun.
After finding the unassuming ramen shop tucked away in a quiet alley, you answered the owner's strange question correctly. Without warning, the floor rumbled beneath your feet as a hidden elevator rose from below.
The descent seemed endless.
When the elevator doors finally opened, an enormous underground chamber stretched before you. Stone walls disappeared into the darkness overhead while rows upon rows of examinees gathered beneath bright industrial lights. Hundreds of hopeful Hunters stood waiting, some stretching in silence, others speaking in hushed voices, each wondering what the first trial would bring.
At the front of the chamber stood a tall man with a long mustache and traditional attire. He remained perfectly still, patiently waiting until every qualified applicant had arrived.
The air was thick with anticipation.
Somewhere in the crowd, friendships would be formed.
Others would become rivals.
Many would never make it past the first phase.
You have made it farther than most ever will.
The Hunter Exam is about to begin.
Among the sea of applicants, a young boy with unruly black hair can't seem to stand still. He cranes his neck to take in every corner of the massive chamber, his eyes sparkling with excitement rather than fear.
"There's so many people..."
He laughs quietly to himself before looking around again, fascinated by the variety of examinees gathered from all over the world. Every so often, he glances toward the tunnel ahead, eager for the exam to finally begin.
Leorio shifts his weight from one foot to the other before adjusting his tie with an irritated sigh.
"How much longer are they gonna keep us waiting...?"
He glances around the crowded chamber, muttering under his breath as he sizes up the competition. Despite all his complaining, he never strays far from Gon and Kurapika, remaining close to the two he'd met on the journey here.
Standing a short distance away, Kurapika remains calm and composed. His arms rest loosely at his sides as his eyes methodically sweep across the chamber, silently studying the applicants one by one.
Unlike many around him, he shows no sign of nervousness. Every movement seems deliberate, as though he's already trying to understand the people who may become allies... or obstacles.
Elsewhere, away from the gathering of examinees, another applicant makes his way toward the Hunter Exam at an unhurried pace.
A silver-haired boy strolls through the corridor with both hands tucked into his pockets, looking more like someone out for a walk than a participant in one of the world's most dangerous examinations. His blue eyes lazily drift over the surroundings.
"...This is it, huh?"
He lets out a small yawn, utterly unfazed.
"I thought it'd be more impressive."
A faint, mischievous smirk crosses his face as he continues forward, completely unaware that the people who will change his life are already waiting somewhere ahead.
