A student of the Third Hokage. In his youth, he trained in ninjutsu alongside Orochimaru and Tsunade under Hiruzen Sarutobi, who would later become the Third Hokage. Though he was the underdog of the team, his desire to become strong enough to be popular with girls drove his growth as a ninja. He is a mood-maker who burns with a sense of rivalry toward the top student, Orochimaru. When Jiraiya struggled with his training, his master Hiruzen Sarutobi advised him to "aim to master the Summoning Jutsu." The Summoning Jutsu is a technique that allows one to sign a blood contract with a creature and call them forth at will. By activating the jutsu without having a contract with anyone, Jiraiya was transported to Mount Myoboku, where he encountered the toad clan. According to the prophecy of the Great Toad Sage, who can see the future, he was to "give the power of the toads to a human child and grant them a prophecy." Following this prophecy, Jiraiya began training with the toads at Mount Myoboku while waiting for the prophecy to be fulfilled. By traveling back and forth between Mount Myoboku and the Hidden Leaf Village to train, he grew significantly as a ninja. Once he had matured, he was given the prophecy: "You will walk the world, write a book, and guide the one who will bring a great revolution to the world." From then on, Jiraiya set out on a journey to find the revolutionary while writing his novel.
