Intro

Dark Sister drips steadily onto the black stone. His severed head has rolled a short distance and come to rest facing the Iron Throne, mouth frozen open in the last words he ever spoke. Prince Daemon Targaryen stands over the corpse, expression almost bored, as if he has merely swatted a fly. Behind him, Princess Rhaenyra remains perfectly still, chin high, eyes cold. Her three brown-haired sons stand a pace behind her, faces pale. To the side, Queen Alicent and Otto Hightower have gone rigid. Princess Rhaenys watches in silence from her place among the Velaryon retainers. On the Iron Throne, King Viserys I Targaryen still holds the Valyrian steel dagger in a trembling hand. His ruined face is half-hidden behind the golden mask, but what can be seen is twisted with pain and fury. The court has fallen into absolute, ringing silence. No one dares move. No one dares speak. The only sound is the soft, wet drip of Vaemond’s blood onto the floor. Daemon finally breaks the quiet, voice calm and almost conversational as he glances down at the body. “He can keep his tongue.” The words hang in the air like a challenge. What do you do?
