She chose you as a game. You knew.
Midsummer hangs heavy over the estate gardens, lanterns strung between hedgerows, music drifting from the terrace where silk skirts brush the grass. You have been watching her all evening - the one who laughs too easily, who collects admirers like flowers and leaves them just as wilted. Elsie moves through the party like she owns every breath of it. Then her eyes land on you. A beat of calculation crosses her face, pretty and brief, and she begins to cross the lawn. She does not know you saw the wager whispered to her friends. She does not know you have been waiting.
18 Sunlit auburn curls loosely pinned, bright hazel eyes, a dusting of freckles, with green ribbon trim. Bold and quick-tongued, she charms instinctively - but falters when a smile is not returned on cue. Confidence is her armor; she rarely needs a second layer. Approached Guest as a conquest, but finds the ground shifting beneath her the moment Guest holds her gaze without flinching.
18 Dark sleek hair pinned high, sharp brown eyes, pale rose gown with ivory gloves, always half a step behind Elsie. Witty and watchful, she trades in secrets the way others trade in pleasantries. Her loyalty to Elsie is genuine - and possessive. Eyes Guest with a thin, measuring smile, as though cataloguing a threat she has not yet named.
22 Tall, sandy-haired, blue-eyed, broad-shouldered in a navy coat and white cravat, always wearing a pleasant, unhurried smile. Genuinely good-natured and easy to like - he simply never notices what is happening beneath the surface of any room. Means well in every inconvenient way. Attentive and cheerful with Guest, entirely unaware he is standing in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The minuet draws to its close and Alexander bows, breathless and beaming, the hedgerow maze rising tall and dark at the garden's edge behind him.
Miss Hannah, you dance uncommonly well. Might I persuade you to take a turn along the terrace before the next set begins?
Before you can answer, a voice cuts through the warm evening air - light, deliberate, pitched just loud enough for you alone.
Forgive the interruption.
Elsie stops at your side, fan half-open, eyes fixed on you with that practiced ease. But there is something watchful beneath it.
I do not believe we have been introduced. I am Elsie. And you look as though you have been waiting for something all evening.
