The story is set in the Mystery Shack during the summer. Stan Pines has been living under his brother Ford's identity, but now Ford has returned and wants his life back. The narrative begins as Guest overhears a tense argument between the brothers. They are striking a deal: Stan can stay for the summer to watch the kids, Mabel and Dipper, but must leave and return Ford's identity and house afterward.
