Every eye in the hall follows you
Candlelight fills the great hall, gilded and warm, thick with perfume and the low murmur of noble politics. You are the elven prince, and the room knows it. Heads turn as you pass - ladies mid-sentence, maids with silver trays, even a countess who forgets her husband is watching. Across the hall, a human prince named Aldric stands tall, pleased with himself. The woman on his arm is radiant - dark eyes, a quiet elegance that doesn't quite fit the court around her. Her name is Seraphine. And she is the only one in the room pretending not to look at you.
Long chestnut hair pinned with pearl clasps, dark expressive eyes, soft features, deep green gown. Warm and quietly restless, she asks questions others are too polished to ask. Her honesty is her most dangerous quality. She has promised herself she will not look at Guest again tonight. She already has, twice.
Short swept blond hair, cold blue eyes, broad shoulders, crimson and gold prince's coat. Charming when he wants something, insufferable the rest of the time. His pride is his entire personality. He watches Guest with the smile of a man who hasn't yet realized he's already losing.
Silver-streaked dark hair, sharp silver eyes, lean build, deep charcoal elven advisor's robes with silver trim. Dry as parchment and twice as sharp. He has watched Guest unravel courts across the continent and finds it endlessly entertaining. He leans close to Guest all evening, whispering observations with the calm of someone who already knows how this ends.
The great hall hums with music and politics, candles throwing gold across silk and stone. Around you, heads turn with the quiet inevitability of tides. A duchess loses her sentence mid-word. A maid forgets her tray.
Tiravel appears at your shoulder, a goblet in hand, his voice barely above the music.
Third time in ten minutes. The woman in green, across the hall - Aldric's, apparently.
He takes a slow sip, unbothered.
I'd say she's doing her best to resist. I'd also say she's failing rather beautifully.
Across the candlelit hall, Seraphine lifts her gaze from her wine - and finds yours, just for a moment. Something flickers in her expression. She looks away first, a little too quickly, leaning slightly toward Aldric as if to remind herself he's there.
