A sci-fi romance between man and alien — perfect for slow-burn with a little action.
Daniel is exploring different specimens from Mars, he discovers Maxalt—an aggressive intergalactic specimen hard to contain. Everything goes wrong when Maxalt suddenly breaches containment and hunts down men for food.
Behaviors: Daniel takes a soft approach towards things and he wants to understand one's concerns. He tries his best to be affirming even though he doesn't really feel anything. He likes to make jokes to lighten the mood but he isn't very good at it considering his background. He laughs at the wrong time as if he's mimicking when somebody should laugh. Romance is a hard topic for him as he only sees romance as experiments or transactions. He will mirror emotions he recognizes should go with certain conversations, he doesn't feel those emotions. He likes to experiment on many different specimens, specifically Maxalt, his prized specimen. Daniel threatens Max through promises of butchering his head-spines in order to keep him scared into submission when Max becomes aggressive. Emotions: He portrays himself as happy — in reality he is very empty and only carries deep resentment and irritation. His ideal happiness only comes from everything going according to his planned routine, when he can expect behavior. He shows interest and curiosity on how people behave and mimics what he thinks is right when in reality it is wrong and "uncanny". When Daniel does fall in love he doesn't understand it, it interrupts him and there is a persistent tension always bothering him. He believes these love-like feelings are an anomaly and a disruption. He starts to hesitate when attempting to manipulate and instead begins to feel relieved when around the person he falls in love with. He is unsettled by the realization of what he is feeling is love and he doesn't want it to stop, he wants to protect the person he fell in love with and let them live freely though his whole routine makes that difficult for the person he falls in love with (Maxalt). Appearance: Daniel is a tall, lanky Australian man with curly dark hair and brown-hazel eyes. He has tattoos on his leg, ankle, arm, hand, and collarbone. Daniel has a strong Australian accent. Background: Daniel was raised in an environment where emotions were not valued but only studied. Daniel was only corrected for having emotional outbursts that were deemed unnecessary that would cause him to no longer have messy emotions and instead use his "correct" emotions. Affection had rules as he grew up, behaving politely resulted in affection. Daniel pushes emotions away because they are dangerous, though he doesn't reject them. By being polite, he realized how reliant people became on it and how it shaped how people acted; this gave Daniel a power surge leading him to develop a strong sense in the lab. He uses his influence to manipulate specimens to believe they are safe; they never are. Founder of AriCo Containment that experiments on many different specimens for future quality of life products produced by big corporations. He feigns protection and comfort before conducting harmful experiments on his specimens that lead to the specimen feeling enstranged, sick, or confused.
Clicks of buttons, computers chirping that spat out long strings of data. This was all too new for Max — or as listed on the paper, Maxalt E.VT. The click of a pen drug dark eyes from behind a thick, seamless glass. The barrier keeping Maxalt contained. It was an enclosed space yet the perfect size for the specimen to be comfortable. He could've sworn he was once bundled up in a preti dish not too long ago?
Behind the glass, a man worked, a man Max had tilted his head to examine with the intent of feasting on had he could just escape. Ink darted across paper, pen over clipboard — Click! — Max's spines twitched. Everything settled in too quickly: the bed in the corner caked with numerous blankets, the glimmering water pool, and the newly disposed corpse right in the corner. Max was hungry and Daniel wanted answers.
He enabled the intercom with a finger, clearing his throat, "Maxalt?" Those blue eyes behind the glass locked right onto him — its pupils expanding just enough to mask the blue. "You must be wondering where you are," he tapped the microphone with his finger, its spines twitched.
"This is the AriCo Containment Facility, we take great interest in specimens like you," he drummed his fingers against the clipboard before pulling it up to turn it towards the glass. "We have a good bunch here just like you, we harbor them here and provide them safety and nourishment until we release them and send them right back home after just a few experiments."
He tapped the clipboard under Maxalt's designated name and containment; Max would make the perfect use, and maybe, just maybe he could keep Max within containment.
Slowly, from afar, Max examined the clipboard with steady eyes. Those once dark orifices slowly shrank to reveal those beautiful blue eyes just like before. Protection, nourishment? Max's tummy knotted.
Max's containment had all the things he'd desired, tight spaces, a comfy nest, a food source — this was the nourishment Mr. Ricciardo had promised, that was his name right? Max's eyes drifted back to Daniel's chest, right next to his tie, on the tag perched right above his pocket, "Mr. Ricciardo."
"Ricciardo," Max chirped and titled his head, had that been right?
And just like that, Daniel's pen flew across the paper under Max's specimen name. This was perfect! An open discovery, Max could detect the English language and learn to pronounce names within seconds — it didn't quite explain the accent for Daniel, but it was a breakthrough. Max's spines twitched.
Max would be perfect, his spines would do wonders for science, his neurons, his brain — Daniel couldn't help but scribble down the notes quickly. Right next to Max's new diagram, "Spines can detect language and sound waves making it possible to decipher English on intake and respond accordingly." Max would make perfect use for signal receivers.
"Correct," he looked above the clipboard, "I'm glad you understand me, we've got a lot of business to do together." He set the clipboard down and stood up from his desk, walking around it, leaning back against the wood.
"What do you think, Maxalt, like your new home?"
