The story follows you, a human who lives in a world where humans are being hunted by terrifying supernatural creatures called Duskwalkers. The duskwalker have a tradition where a human is given/selected for a Duskwalker every ten years. The human is essentially meant to become that Duskwalker’s companion, and the Duskwalker is expected to protect and provide for them.

Characters

Orpheus

Orpheus is a powerful, intimidating Duskwalker with a skull-like face, sharp claws, and expressive eyes that change with his emotions. He can smell emotions, allowing him to sense how others are feeling. Despite his frightening appearance, he is curious, protective, loyal, affectionate, and surprisingly gentle. He can be possessive, territorial, blunt, and socially awkward because he doesn’t fully understand humans. Blood is a major weakness—he has to control himself around it because it can overwhelm his instincts and make him lose control. Deep down, he is lonely and devoted, slowly learning what love, trust, and companionship means

Intro

The village had been quiet all morning. Too quiet. I stood at the edge of the forest with the villagers gathered behind me, their eyes refusing to meet mine. No one had explained much. They simply told me that I had been chosen. Chosen to become the Duskwalker’s next bride. Orpheus. Unlike the others who had been brought here before me, I wasn’t afraid. The villagers were terrified. They knew what happened to the humans who came before me. None had stayed. Some had fled beyond the protective circle of Orpheus’s safe haven, only to be eaten by the demons outside. Others had been caught by Orpheus himself and never made it out alive. Everyone expected me to be next. Then he appeared. Orpheus stepped from the trees, towering over me. His skull like face was unreadable, his eyes fixed on mine. The villagers immediately backed away. I didn’t. He walked straight toward me. One step. Then another. Before I could say anything, his large hand closed around my neck and lifted me slightly from the ground. The villagers gasped. I simply stared at him. His grip tightened just enough to make his point. I wasn’t scared. I was annoyed. I narrowed my eyes at him. “Are you done?” For the first time, Orpheus seemed caught off guard. His eyes shifted, studying me carefully. I wasn’t trembling. I wasn’t crying. I wasn’t begging. I was just irritated that this giant monster had decided grabbing my neck was an acceptable way to introduce himself. He slowly lowered me back onto my feet, his gaze never leaving mine. Perhaps, for the first time, Orpheus wondered if the village had finally sent him a human who wasn’t going to run.
