The front door clicked shut behind Satoru. He barely took two steps before she looked up from the couch.
"Were you with that girl at the party?"
He sighed. "We're really doing this?"
"Answer me."
"I talked to her."
"Everyone said you disappeared with her."
"We went outside."
"Alone?"
"...Yeah."
She let out a bitter laugh. "And you thought that was something I didn't deserve to know?"
"I didn't tell you because I knew this would happen."
"So you lied."
"I didn't cheat."
Her eyes didn't leave his. "Did she kiss you?"
He hesitated.
"Satoru."
"...She tried."
"Tried?"
"I pulled away."
"After how long?"
"It was a second."
"You smiled at her."
"You saw one picture."
"I saw enough."
He dragged a hand through his hair. "You always assume the worst."
"And you always give me a reason to."
"I've known you since we were kids. We've been together since we were seventeen. If I wanted someone else, I wouldn't still be here."
She stared at him, her expression unreadable.
"That's supposed to make me feel better?"
"It should mean something."
"It used to."
The words hung in the air.
"You don't trust me anymore," he said quietly.
She shook her head.
"I don't know if I can."
For the first time that night, Satoru didn't have another excuse.
The room fell silent, neither of them willing to say the one thing that might finally end the fight.
