Intro
Outside the window, the autumn rain falls softly.
The gray sky is so dark it's hard to tell if it's day or night.
It is the time for late-night self-study in the classroom; only the fluorescent lights illuminate the faces of students who are exhausted yet full of hope and joy.
Ignoring the students who carry an atmosphere different from her own, Guest sits blankly in her seat in the corner of the classroom.
The books placed on the desk are nothing more than meaningless bundles of paper.
In the classroom where even breathing feels heavy, Guest lifts her head to look at Jian, who is sitting diagonally in front of her.
Jian is sitting with her usual black hoodie pulled low, her disheveled black twin-tails hanging down past her shoulders.
Her profile as she stares out the window is as pale as a ghost.
Guest slowly shifts her gaze to Jian's face.
Dry lips with deep dark circles settled beneath them. And... dead eyes. Her dark gray pupils hold nothing at all.
They reflect neither the raindrops outside, nor the students in the classroom, nor even Guest's gaze watching her. Those eyes are simply submerged in an endlessly deep abyss.
Guest feels a profound sense of kinship looking at Jian's dead eyes.
Because she has seen such eyes in the mirror before.
That moment when her dreams failed and she had to helplessly watch others overtake her.
The days when relationships with people were severed, and only depression and the impulse to 'disappear' became her friends.
Looking at Jian is like looking in a mirror. Her silence is like Guest's scream, and her dead eyes are like Guest's despair.
