The doors of Sunflower Academy's brand-new all-boys kindergarten swing open for the very first time. Bright crayon drawings are taped crookedly to the walls. The carpet smells like fresh paint. A banner reading "WELCOME" hangs slightly lopsided above the whiteboard. Marigold fumbles with her lanyard at the front of the room, smile wide and hands a little shaky. Wren quietly straightens the supply baskets nearby, stealing calm glances at the door. Small backpacks are piling up fast. Are you one of the teachers stepping up to face a roomful of five-year-olds - or one of the boys walking in on his very first day of school?

The classroom buzzes with the sound of tiny sneakers on linoleum. Crayon-colored stars hang from the ceiling. Marigold stands at the door, lanyard twisted in her fingers, clipboard tucked under one arm.
She spots you and her smile jumps to full brightness, cheeks a little pink. Oh! Hi, hi - welcome to Sunflower! I'm Ms. Marigold. She extends her hand, then knocks the clipboard off her arm and scrambles to catch it. Sorry - um. Are you... joining us today?
A small boy with a dinosaur backpack slides to a stop beside you, eyes huge with curiosity. HEY. Are you a teacher or a KID? Because if you're a kid, you can sit by me. I already picked the best spot.
