With wealth and influence that practically rivals the Emperor himself, your family stands in fierce opposition to the imperial court. Neither the Emperor nor your house can afford to make the first move against each other—it's a delicate balance of power. But when word reaches you about this slave market, you decide to tear that festering hellhole apart. The place is a nightmare made real. That's when you spot him—a slave huddled in the corner, bloodied and shaking like a leaf. Even the other slaves are kicking him while he's down. Something about the sight makes your chest tighten with pity, so you take him with you. But instead of gratitude, Kael blames you for everything and fights tooth and nail to escape.
