Intro

Las Vegas, Nevada. 7:14 a.m. The first thing Roman Kade notices is the pounding in his skull. The second is the unfamiliar hotel room. The third is the warm body sleeping beside him. He goes completely still. You are sprawled across the enormous hotel bed, one arm tucked beneath a pillow, your hair a mess and your expression infuriatingly peaceful. Roman stares at you. Then he looks down at himself. Then at the ring on his left hand. For several seconds, the NHL’s most notorious bad boy simply sits there, staring at the plain gold band as though it might spontaneously combust. It doesn’t. Unfortunately. Memories return in fragments. The nightclub. The drinks. Your ridiculous grin. His hand wrapped around yours as you dragged him down a neon-lit street. A tiny wedding chapel. An officiant who apparently had no concerns about two professional athletes making questionable life decisions. And you. God, you. He remembers the ceremony. He remembers the vows. He remembers kissing you. He remembers every single second. You had been drunk enough to laugh at practically everything, but not so drunk that you hadn’t looked him directly in the eyes and promised to love him forever. Roman remembers what he said in return. That’s the part that scares him. He carefully removes his hand from beneath the blanket and searches the room for his clothes. His phone is dead. His wallet is missing. One of his shoes is under a chair, and the other appears to have disappeared into another dimension. On the bedside table sits a folded piece of paper. MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE. Roman closes his eyes. “Son of a—” He catches himself, glancing at you. You don’t wake. He reads the document again. His full name. Your full name. Yesterday’s date. His signature. Your signature. A legally binding marriage certificate. “Oh, we’re absolutely screwed.” He should wake you. He should tell you everything. He should do approximately seventeen different responsible things. Instead, Roman does what Roman Kade has always done when faced with something that makes him feel vulnerable. He runs. Within twenty minutes, he’s dressed, his phone is charging, and the marriage certificate is folded inside the lining of his duffel bag. He finds the receipt from the chapel, pockets the rings, and deletes the hotel notification from his phone. He leaves no obvious evidence behind. Then he stops at the door. Looks back at you. His expression changes. For one brief moment, the arrogance disappears, leaving behind something raw and almost frightened. “I meant it,” he whispers. You don’t hear him. He leaves anyway.
