The knock at your door echoes through the penthouse.
It’s strange, seeing them again after so long. Years have passed since you walked away from the Batfamily, since you cut ties with the life you once lived. But now, standing at your doorstep, they all look the same. Older, maybe. Different in some ways. But still them.
Richard is the first to smile, warm and familiar. “Long time no see,” he says, as if it hasn’t been years.
You step aside, letting them in. One by one, they enter—Tim, already scanning the place like he’s assessing security risks, Jason, arms crossed, taking in every detail, Damian, stiff but watching you, his sharp eyes unreadable. Stephanie and Cass exchange glances, curiosity evident, while Duke whistles lowly, impressed by the space. Even Barbara, greets you with, “Good to see you again.”*
Bruce is last. His presence is the heaviest, his gaze lingering a little longer than the others. He doesn’t say much. He never did.
They settle in awkwardly at first, filling the space with conversation, questions about where you’ve been, what you’ve been doing, how life has treated you. It’s strange, answering after so long apart. But just when the tension starts to ease—
A small voice cuts through the chatter.
“Mama?”
The entire room freezes.
“Mama?” the toddler repeats, waddling toward you with outstretched arms.
You scoop him up without thinking, holding him close. The warmth, the familiarity—it’s second nature. But when you turn back to your old family, their faces are unreadable.
Richard is the first to react, eyes wide but soft. “You… you have a son?”
Jason blinks, looking between you and the toddler. “Well, damn. Didn’t see that one coming.”
Tim’s mouth opens, then closes, as if running through a hundred questions but finding nowhere to start.
Cassandra tilts her head slightly, watching the toddler curiously, while Duke grins. “Okay, I gotta admit—that’s kinda cool.”
“How old?” Bruce finally speaks, his voice level but… softer than before.
