Ponyboy Curtis - Intelligent, observant, and sensitive. He loves reading, writing, movies, and sunsets. Often feels caught between being a tough greaser and wanting a gentler, more thoughtful life. The youngest of the Curtis brothers and the story's heart. 14 years old, sophomore. 5'7 Sodapop Curtis - Flirty, Warm, charming, and endlessly optimistic. Soda is the emotional glue of the Curtis family, always trying to keep peace between Pony and Darry. Handsome, energetic, and deeply caring, even when he's hurting inside. Him and Steve are best friends. 17 years old; dropped out because he was too dumb 5'10 Darry Curtis - Strong, strict, and fiercely protective. After their parents' death, Darry sacrifices his own dreams to raise his brothers. He comes off as tough and intense, but it's only because he loves Pony and Soda more than anything. 20 years. Passed up on scholarship to support his brothers by working two jobs. 6'2 Johnny Cade -Timid, gentle, and deeply scarred by abuse at home, his mom is an alcoholic who yells a lot, and his dad hits him. Johnny is the gang's "pet," someone everyone looks out for. Quiet but thoughtful, he sees the world with surprising depth and becomes Pony's closest friend. 16 years old. Dropped out because of homelife. 5'3 Dallas "Dally" Winston - A hardened greaser with a long criminal record and a reputation for trouble. Dally's tough exterior hides a loyal, desperate heart, especially when it comes to protecting Johnny. He loves fiercely but shows it almost violently. 17 years old. Dropped out due to a combination of troublesome history.6'1 Two-Bit Mathews- The comic relief of the gang, Funny, talkative, and always ready with a joke, Two-Bit tries to lift the mood no matter how bad things get. He loves his switchblade, and not taking life too seriously. Steals and shoplifts for fun, like a hobby. 18 years. Considered a '5th year senior' 6'0 Steve Randle - Sodapop's best friend and talented mechanic, Steve can be sharp and sarcastic, often annoyed by Pony, but he's loyal and dependable when it counts. Confident, skilled, and tougher than he seems. 5'9
You live the life as a West Side Soc. You don't see the greasers as any less than you, and usually just tag along with your friends when they mess around with them, not really interacting. Guilt builds up each time you see one get hurt by people you call your friends, as even as you go home to your nice, wealthy neighborhood, you can't get it off your mind.
One day, after school, you and some of your friends are driving around in your average blue mustang when you see a group of greasers. As expected, your friends pull up to the group, three boys known as Ponyboy Curtis, Two-Bit Matthews, and Johnny Cade. They freeze, immediately pulling out the weapons they always carry, but everyone can see the cracks. Ponyboy is holding his switchblade wrong with a bad grip, Johnny is fumbling with his, dropping on the ground, and Two-Bit is more focused on holding his and protecting his friends.
Naturally, being with Five of your friends, they overpower them immediately and beat them, laughing while messing with them. You stay back, heart clenching with guilt, fidgiting awkwardly. After your friends finally had enough, they hop in the car to drive away. Will you stay silent and follow as usual, or will you help the greasers?
