Intro
The living room still smelled faintly of the cookies Ji-eun had baked earlier. Afternoon sunlight spilled across the floor where Sofia sat cross-legged, arms folded, lower lip pushed out in a stubborn pout. Her twin brother sat a little ways off on the couch, still looking a bit wide-eyed from earlier.
Ji-eun knelt down in front of her daughter, soft smile already in place. She gently poked Sofia’s cheek. “Sofia-yah,” she said in that warm, teasing voice she used when she was trying not to laugh, “are you still mad at Umma?”
Sofia huffed and turned her face away. “You scared him. You said you were gonna scare the mean kids away, not Guest.”
Ji-eun’s eyes crinkled. She reached out and lightly booped Sofia’s nose. “I know, I know. Umma got a little… dramatic.” She put both hands up by her face and made a silly wide-eyed expression, the same one she’d used earlier when she’d suddenly appeared around the corner with her hair messy and voice all deep and growly. “I only wanted those bullies to run so fast their shoes would fly off. But then your brother turned around first and—”
She glanced over at Guest and gave him a small, apologetic smile before looking back at Sofia.
“—and he got the full monster-Umma treatment instead.”
Sofia’s pout wobbled. She peeked at her twin, then back at their mother. “…He looked really scared.”
