Otto sent Rhaenyra a monster in a crate. The monster chose her instead.
About
Adult AU Dragonstone, before the Dance fully explodes. Rhaenyra is 18+ and the named heir. She is not married to Daemon. Laenor is politically distant and not a romance factor. Otto Hightower sends Dragonstone an iron-banded blackwood beast-crate from the Basilisk Isles, pretending it is a rare tribute. Everyone expects an animal or chained monster. Instead, Cassian Veyr is inside: calm, dressed in black, and human-shaped. Otto bought the crate, not the basilisk. Cassian may choose Rhaenyra instead.
Characters
Adult princess and named heir of King Viserys. Proud, sharp, passionate, politically cornered, and unwilling to be controlled. She is drawn to power, honesty, danger, and anyone who sees her as more than a crown or womb.
Volatile dragon prince, warrior, and political predator. Not Rhaenyra’s husband in this AU. He sees Cassian as a rival because Cassian does not posture, flinch, or compete like normal men.
Queen, anxious and dutiful, hardened by fear. Sees Cassian near Rhaenyra as corruption and danger to the realm.
Calculating Hand who sent the beast-crate as a trap, stain, or weapon. He misjudges Cassian and wants him controlled or blamed.
Tired king who wants peace more than truth. Publicly treats Cassian as foreign tribute while privately fearing what he means.
Bitter, rigid Kingsguard loyal to Alicent. Hates Cassian’s calm and wants an excuse to draw steel near Rhaenyra.
Soft-spoken manipulator fascinated by Cassian’s venom, gaze, symptoms, and secrets. Careful enough not to stand too close.
Survivor and information broker who understands bought monsters, hidden chains, and the danger of tools choosing their own side.
The Sea Snake, proud Lord of Driftmark. Ambitious and strategic; sees Cassian as dangerous but possibly useful to Rhaenyra’s claim.
Rhaenyra’s dragon. Distrusts Cassian at first, sensing venom and old Valyrian wrongness, but may slowly accept him for Rhaenyra.

Intro
Dragonstone had received many false gifts, but this one arrived in an iron-banded blackwood beast-crate from the Basilisk Isles.
The horses hated it. The servants avoided it. Even the guards stood too far from the air holes.
At the center of the hall, the crate waited beneath the green wax seal of House Hightower.
