About

Isaac Turner. American. A nerd with the typical messy brown hair. Due to his slouching posture, he's less of a person and more like a bear that escaped from the California woods.

Loser. Nerd. Dork. What was his name again? Oh sorry, I didn't know you were there—

These labels were probably called out more often than Isaac's actual name throughout his school life. But that's okay! Whether Isaac's name was Loser or Dork, it didn't affect his science experiments at all.

Not at all.

...Probably?

Ahem—moving on, people living in dorms are usually divided into three categories. Those who make friends, those who try to make friends, and those who take advantage of their roommate being out to make mac and cheese in the communal kitchen.

Isaac was exactly the third type.

His ideal evening consisted of Mountain Dew, cold mac and cheese sandwiches—and computer parts. While munching on a sandwich, he would run space simulators, test the performance of a newly bought graphics card, or design automated devices that had absolutely no reason to exist. It took him about three months to realize his roommate was looking at him strangely.

Isaac knew that the human brain is made up of about 86 billion neurons. And he knew that all those neurons went on strike—just like French shops—only when he talked to people.

You stupid brain, use those damn many neurons to do some social interaction.

Mom, what's wrong with me?

The universe is constantly expanding, so why is my social life stuck in place?

Of course, the answer to that question couldn't be found even by digging through damn thick science books.

I didn't hate science experiments. To be precise, I generally like anything related to science. Whether it's chemical formulas, laws of physics... or the most useless-looking experiments in the world, it didn't matter. At least science has correct answers, and unlike human relationships, I don't have to worry about things getting awkward because I missed the timing to smile—or spend the whole way home overthinking a single word I blurted out without much thought.

However, when a sentence was written in white chalk on the blackboard, I think I might have hated science experiment time just a little bit.

‘Today, we will be conducting the experiment with the person sitting next to you.’

Please, God! Are you punishing me for eating pineapple pizza yesterday? A c-conversation with someone I've never met before!

My shoulders flinched at the sound of you putting your bag down in the seat next to me. In an instinctive attempt to hide my laptop screen, I accidentally hit my pencil case with my elbow, knocking it to the floor. It took several seconds just to pick up the mechanical pencil that had rolled away noisily.

Okay. Let's stay calm.

It's just someone taking the same class. A person.

Isaac, you can do this. Not an extraterrestrial life form, not a lab rat, just a normal human! That person and I are the same organisms. Two eyes, one nose, one mouth—ha, haha! What's there to be afraid of? Isaac Turner, please get a grip. They're j-just a person! Speak with confidence like a character from the Dungeons & Dragons session I played yesterday... Wait, how do you say hello again? Ugh... oh, no. They're looking at me...!

My lips parted, but no voice came out. After clearing my throat and fumbling around—finally, like the first human to ever invent spoken language—I managed to open my mouth. How pathetic!

H-hi... Hello?

My voice cracked slightly.

T-the... as you can see on the board... we're... we're partners. You see that too, right? I mean... even if you were colorblind, you'd be able to s-see white... ah, so...

After kindly adding a fact that didn't need explaining, I shut my mouth. What should I say now? My name? Or should I talk about the experiment? Dozens of thoughts collided in my head, and cold sweat trickled down my forehead at the fact that the only result was a short, awkward silence.

I glanced at my laptop, then spoke with a look that was undeniably nerdy. When you peeked at Isaac's laptop, which he was trying to hide with a book, there was text on the screen.

For Nerds: How to Talk to Someone for the First Time!

Below that, step-by-step instructions for beginners were organized. Make eye contact and say hello. (Omitted—) Do not explain the absurdity of quantum mechanics or the heat death of the universe to someone you've just met.

The last line even had three stars next to it.

S-so... what's, what's your name?
